Choosing the Right Sunscreen

SPF:

Look for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 40, which offers good protection against UVB rays.

Broad-Spectrum Protection:

Ensure the sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for the term "broad-spectrum" on the label.

Water Resistance:

If you are swimming or sweating, choose a water-resistant sunscreen. But no sunscreen is fully waterproof, so reapply afterwards as well.

Skin Type:

Consider your skin type when choosing a sunscreen. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, look for a lightweight formula. If you have dry skin, opt for a moisturizing sunscreen.

Sweat Resistance:

Some sunscreens are resistant to sweat and rubbing, ensuring that the sunscreen stays in place even during physical activity. These sunscreens can be ideal for outdoor sports or activities.

Environmental Protection:

Some sunscreens offer protection against environmental factors such as pollution and infrared radiation. These sunscreens can help protect the skin from additional damage caused by environmental factors.

The Different Types of Sunscreen

Physical Blockers Sunscreen:

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, common physical blockers, form a protective barrier, shielding the skin from harmful UV rays. This physical barrier prevents the penetration of ultraviolet radiation, safeguarding the skin against potential damage.

Chemical Absorbers Sunscreen:

Chemical absorbers like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate create a protective film that absorbs UV rays, preventing them from penetrating the skin. These ingredients are prevalent in sunscreens for effective sun protection.

Applying Sunscreen

Apply sunscreen before heading outdoors. Allow 15 minutes for the sunscreen to become absorbed into your skin.

Use an adequate amount of sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology states that adults need at least one ounce of sunscreen (enough to fill your palm) to fully cover all exposed areas of your body.

Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin. Don't forget to generously apply sunscreen to your face, neck, ears, and scalp or head (if you have thinning hair). Apply a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher to protect your lips.

Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating heavily.

Apply sunscreen on cloudy days too. Harmful UV radiation can reflect off of snow, clouds and other surfaces.

The Sunscreen Manufacturing Process

Preparing Individual Phases:

Oil Phase: Oil-soluble ingredients, such as certain emollients and organic UV filters, are combined.

Water Phase: Water-soluble components are mixed in a separate vessel.

Emulsification:

The oil and water phases are blended under controlled conditions to form a stable emulsion, the base for most sunscreens.

Incorporating UV Filters:

UV filters are evenly distributed throughout the emulsion. This step is crucial for consistent UV protection.

Homogenization and Refinement:

The mixture is homogenized to ensure a smooth, even texture.

Cooling and Final Additions:

As the product cools, heat-sensitive ingredients like antioxidants and fragrances are added.

Quality Assurance:

The final product is tested for SPF accuracy, broad-spectrum coverage, and safety before packaging.

FAQ

Q: Are there sunscreens for use during sport?

A: Yes, some sunscreens are labelled as sport products and are suitable because they have been specially formulated to stay on the skin during sport.

Q: Is sunscreen safe to use?

A: The Canadian Dermatology Association supports the use of sunscreen as an effective and safe means to provide protection from the sun's harmful rays. There is strong scientific evidence of the adverse effects of UV exposure in contrast to the hypothetical negative effects of sunscreen on your health. Seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and using a broad spectrum sunscreen all help in providing safe sun protection.

Q: Are there any sunscreens for sensitive skin?

A: If you have sensitive skin, try a small amount of the product on your arm and check for any reaction up to 48 hours later. People allergic or intolerant to the chemicals in sunscreens should look for products labelled "chemical‐free". These usually contain ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that reflect rather than absorb the sun's rays and are much less likely to cause a reaction.

Q: Are children more susceptible to developing a reaction to sunscreens?

A: In general, children under the age of two have more sensitive skin, but generally do not have problems with the use of sunscreens. It is important to note that many people can react to preservatives or fragrances contained in many products such as moisturizers, soaps or sunscreens, and this is much more common than reacting to an actual sunscreen filter.

Q: When should I put on sunscreen?

A: You should apply sunscreen generously and evenly before sun exposure to allow the active ingredients to bond to your skin. To be effective, all sunscreens need to be liberally applied; for example, one palm‐full for each arm and one for each leg. Also, remember to reapply regularly, especially after sweating heavily or swimming.

Q: Does a product still work after its expiry date?

A: Sunscreens contain chemicals that eventually break down, compromising the effectiveness of the product, so you should not use a sunscreen after its expiry date. Also, sunscreens are often kept in hot temperatures ‐ In the glove compartment of a car or in a beach bag ‐ conditions which accelerate the deterioration of the product.
